Too lazy to do anything
I’ve been too lazy to do anything with respect to writing code, making blog entries, or doing anything else other than work and consume various media; this isn’t very good for me, and as an aside I think my childhood enthusiasm for programming has finally been exhausted. That surely isn’t good for me, seeing as how I’m only 24 years old. When did this get to be a chore to me? Anyhow, here’s the last ten quotes I added to my sigquotes file. If I’ve Emailed you at work, you’ve probably seen some of them, as I use Fortune and eruby to put them into my signature.
- “Politeness is to human nature what warmth is to wax.” – Arthur Schopenhauer
- “Never mistake a clear view for a short distance” – Paul Saffo
- “This is where I am great. I am great at being very, very stubborn and ignoring all sorts of reasons why you should change your goal, reasons that many other people will be susceptible to. Many people want to be on the winning side. I didnt give a damn about that. I wanted to be on the side that was right, and even if I didnt win, at least I was going to give it a good try.” – RMS
- “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men.” – Herman Melville
- “Narrowness of experience leads to narrowness of imagination.” – Rob Pike
- Mamihlapinatapai (n.):
1. A look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that both desire but which neither one wants to start; “ending up mutually at a loss as to what to do about each other.” - “A ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are for.” – John A. Shedd
- “If you understand, things are just as they are; if you do not understand, things are just as they are.” – Zen Koan
- “If you destroy a bridge, be sure you can swim.” – African Proverb
- “Only a fool fights in a burning house.” – Old Klingon Proverb
An elegant summary of 4000 years of organized religion
“If there is a god, he sure hates people. That’s all I can say.”
- Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Timequake
Quotes from my old blog that I still like/find interesting
I tried to import these using the RSS feed but no dice.
“If our Gods and our hopes are nothing but scientific phenomena, then let us admit it must be said that our love is scientific as well.”
- Mathias Villiers de l’Isle-Adam“…I always had one foot out the door, and that prevented me from doing a lot of things; like thinking about my future. I guess it made more sense to commit to nothin’, keep my options open. And that’s suicide; by tiny, tiny increments.”
- High Fidelity
“On the contrary, if the universe were just electrons and selfish genes, meaningless tragedies like the crashing of this bus [full of children from a Roman Catholic school and for no apparent reason but with wholesale loss of life] are exactly what we should expect, along with equally meaningless good fortune. Such a universe would be neither evil nor good in intention. It would manifest no intentions of any kind. In a universe of blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won’t find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, and no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.”
- Richard Dawkins (before he was making headlines)
“When you grow up surrounded
by willful ignorance,
you learn that mercy has its own country
and that it’s round and borderless”
- Ani Difranco“The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; and worship without sacrifice.”
- Mahatma Gandhi
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”
- Martin Luther King Jr.“For those being excluded (referring to homosexuals today), this is a reign of terror. Nothing less.”
- Philip Armstrong“A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.”
- Mahatma Gandhi“There is no greater sin than desire,
No greater curse than discontent,
No greater misfortune than wanting something for oneself.
Therefore he who knows that enough is enough will always have enough.”
- Lao Tzu
From my friend Meredith
“Nothing in this world, this existence, this history, even remotely resembles the concentration camp Auschwitz. To simply walk through the gate knocks your feet out from under you, and then drags you through a field of glass and blood. It is the cursed graveyard of Hell. Its ghosts infect you, whisper their horrors until you can think of nothing else. If you go there, ‘you’ don’t come back. You can’t, because it won’t let you. It is haunted by the memory of itself.” – Anonymous
This movie continues to be awesome
“M. Dufayel: Voilà , ma petite Amélie; vous n’avez pas des os en verre, vous pouvez vous cognez à la vie. Si vous laissez passer cette chance, alors avec le temps, c’est votre coeur qui va devenir aussi sec et cassant que mon squelette”
Translated:
[Mr. Dufayel is a friend of Amelie who has a condition where his bones break so easily that he cannot leave his house]
Mr. Dufayel: My little Amelie, you don’t have bones made of glass; you’ve always been able to take life’s knocks. But if you miss this chance, in time, it is your heart which will become dry and brittle like my skeleton.
The more I think about athiesm, the crappier it gets
“If our Gods and our hopes are nothing but scientific phenomena, then let us admit it must be said that our love is scientific as well.”
– Mathias Villiers de l'Isle-Adam
